Catserver's Story

Catserver was created in early 2004 as a experiment; seeing just what I could do with the little I learned from a small class on webdesign I was taking. The first version of Catserver was way back in late 2003, as a local file server for my newly-created home network. After I saw the web server feature in OS 9, I decided to try it out. Maybe create a family web site with some photos and movies from our vacation. However, it didn't stop there. No one in my family ever visited Catserver, so I eventually began closing it off to family Items, moving it more towards what it is today: A web resource. The first version to officially use this idea was Catserver Online 3.5, and then, well, as you can see it moved from there. Catserver 5.0 was a revolution for the site; entirely graphics based, a whole new data tree, better organized, more user friendly, and universally compatible with code standardized to work with any web browser on any platform running any resolution over 1024x768. As my skills as a web and graphics designer improved, I pushed my limits and created Catserver 6.0. Being intensely graphics based with little advance in coding (with the exception of extensive use of CSS), it was deeply flawed from the beginning. Due to its terrible lack of Internet Explorer support and specific resolution requirements, many computers were entirely unable to display CSO6.0 how it was originally intended. This became evident to me shortly after its release, and I immediately set forth remedy the problem. The result of my effort was Catserver 6.5 Beta, which had much lower resolution requirements, and was the first version ever to incorporate PHP. Not only that, but it was entirely W3C certified and displayed correctly in all common browsers. However, a simple fault with the sidebar halted its release indefinitely and CSO6 remained the active version. Until now. Catserver 7 was started in march, approximately, and has been the quickest release to date. It is entirely built with the idea of easy editability, loading all repetitive page elements from include files. A side benefit of this, of course, is that the site is easily skinable. Three such skins are the designed-for-IE-compatibility CSO6.5 skin, the highly scaleable CSO7 Low skin, and the uniquely designed CSO7 Metallic skin. Don't like what you see? Change it! Catserver has now become 100% web 2.0. What next?

Compatibilty

There are known compatibility problems with certain browsers, some of which are hard (if not impossible) to fix.

Internet Explorer 6 and older: These previous generation browsers have no support for transparent png files, which are used in the nav bar and in various other locations on other skins. I have not tested any IE versions older than 6, aside from 5.2 Mac, but I can say with a high degree of certainty that they will not display this site correctly.

Firefox, Opera, and Internet Explorer 7: No known errors occur with these browsers, since the site was specifically designed to work with these in the first place. Let me know if you find any.

Safari: There are no real display issues, with the exception of the repeated image gradient that behind the nav bar. Everything I've seen indicates that, for some reason, Safari doesn't support repeated background images in tables. Odd, but not a big deal.
